PD Dr. Med. Thomas Giesen

Specialist in Hand Surgery

Specialist in orthopedics and musculoskeletal trauma

I was born in Berlin, Germany, but I grew up and studied in Italy where I graduated at the University of Milan in 2001.

During my apprenticeship years in orthopaedic and musculoskeletal system surgery, while still in Milan, I became fascinated with an incredible instrument, the hand, one of the keys to human evolution. From the third year onwards, I joined fellowships aimed at learning this detailed and precise surgery that since 2003, after graduating in Orthopaedics and Traumatology in 2006, and until 2010, made me visit and perform surgeries in some of the most important hand surgery clinics in the world.

The “Ganga Hospital” in India, the “St'Andrew's Centre for Plastic Surgery and Burns” near London and the “Kleinert Institute” in the United States, are some of the experiences I had that I found the most beneficial, which also left me with friendships, in the professional space and outside of it, that still last to this day.

In 2010 I started working as a head physician and Team Leiter of Hand Surgery at the USZ, until 2017, when I graduated as a Privatdozent of Hand Surgery at the University of Zurich.

Since 2018 my main focus has been contributing to this complex and magnificent discipline, in Ticino.

Dr. Lorenzo Costa

I was born in Ticino, in Mendrisio, in 1995, where I grew up until I completed my scientific maturity in 2014. I then moved to French-speaking Switzerland to start my medical studies at the University of Lausanne, where I graduated in 2022.
From the early years of my studies, I immediately felt a deep passion for human anatomy and the world of microsurgery, a passion that strongly influenced my interests and extracurricular experiences. I worked as a university assistant in anatomy and completed several internships in Switzerland and abroad in the field of plastic and reconstructive surgery.

In November 2022, right after obtaining my federal diploma in Medicine, I began my professional career at the General Surgery and Orthopedics Department of the Regional Hospital of Locarno. Here, I completed two main rotations in the Emergency Department and the Orthopedics and Traumatology Department before starting a rotation in Hand Surgery at the Locarno Hand Center.

Since April 2024, I have started a professional experience under the guidance of specialist PD Dr. Thomas Giesen to continue my specialist training.
